Pharmacological group: Antiviral agents. ATX code D06B B03.
Dosage form:
Ointment. Basic physical and chemical properties: homogeneous white ointment with a weak specific odor.
Composition:
Active ingredient: Aciclovir
1 g of ointment contains aciclovir in terms of 100% substance 25 mg; excipients: propylene glycol, proxanol 268-F, polyethylene oxide 400, emulsifier 1.
Pharmacodynamics:
Herpevir Ointment is an antiviral drug that has high in vitro activity against herpes simplex virus types I and II. The toxic effect on the cells of the host is minimal. Once in cells infected with the herpes virus, aciclovir is phosphorylated to form the active compound, acyclovir triphosphate. The first step in this process depends on the presence of virus-coded thymidine kinase. Aciclovir triphosphate acts as an inhibitor and substrate for viral DNA polymerase, preventing further viral DNA synthesis without affecting normal cellular processes.
Indications:
Infections of the lips and face caused by the herpes simplex virus (Herpes labialis).
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to aciclovir, valaciclovir, propylene glycol or other components of the ointment.
Interaction with other medicinal products and other types of interactions: No interaction was found.
Method of administration and dosage:
The drug is intended for external use only.
For children over 12 years of age and adults, Herpevir Ointment should be applied 5 times a day at approximately 4-hour intervals, except at night. It is important to start treatment as soon as possible at the onset of the infection, preferably during the prodromal period or at the erythema stage. You can start treatment in the later stages – papules or bladder.
Treatment should be continued for at least 4 days. If healing has not occurred, treatment can be continued for up to 10 days. If the symptoms of the disease do not disappear after 10 days of treatment, the patient should consult a doctor. Hands should be washed before and after applying the ointment, and avoid excessive rubbing or touching the affected area with a towel to prevent exacerbation or transmission of infection.
Application features:
The ointment should only be used to treat cold sores on the lips and face.
It is not recommended to apply the ointment to the mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes and use it to treat genital herpes.
Avoid accidental contact with the eyes.
Individuals who suffer from particularly severe and repetitive manifestations of Herpes labialis need the advice of a doctor. Persons with herpes should be warned against contact transmission of the virus to others, especially in the presence of open lesions (for example, washing hands before and after using the ointment). Not recommended for people with immunodeficiency. Such individuals need medical advice regarding the treatment of any infection.
The ability to influence the reaction rate when driving or operating machinery: No data available.
Application during pregnancy or lactation: For pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding, the drug is recommended to be used only in cases where the benefit, in the opinion of the doctor, outweighs the risk.
Children: There is insufficient data on the safety of using the drug for children under 12 years old, therefore it is recommended to use the drug for children over 12 years old.
Overdose: In case of accidental oral or topical application of the entire tube of ointment, an adverse effect is unlikely due to the minimal systemic effect. If an overdose is suspected, seek medical attention.
Adverse Reactions:
In some patients, when using the ointment, a temporary, rapidly passing sharp or burning pain may appear. In about 5% of patients, slight drying and flaking of the skin is possible. Also, in a small proportion of patients, erythema (redness) and itching are possible. Very rarely, cases of contact dermatitis have been reported after topical application of acyclovir preparations, and most often this is due to the components of the ointment base, and not to acyclovir. There are isolated reports of immediate hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema, due to topical application of acyclovir.
Shelf life: 5 years.
Storage conditions:
Store in its original packaging at a temperature not exceeding 25 °C.
